To find balance with the feminine, the masculine must be given equal consideration. Nature must be complimented by civilization, yet not overrun by it. This is the true balancing act of the Emperor, to bring law and order to the situation of life so that it may flourish, yet not overpower with dominance or authority so that what should be cherished is crushed. This is done by finding the Emperor within you and realizing that it is up to you to establish the guidelines, principles, and self control necessary to be the ruler of yourself lest someone else take advantage of your weakness and make you part of their empire.
This is s common action in the world today as people seem to give over their power to others hand over fist, be it to domineering personalities, governmental organizations, or sometimes religious groups and cults. Yet each of us, if we are to move forward on this evolutionary journey of becoming the people we imagine ourselves to be, must ascend our own throne and declare our authority over our own rules, regulations, and activities. The Empress declares to us that we have the bounty of creation at our disposal through the gifts that nature offers, and so the Emperor tells to use those gifts wisely, resourcefully, and with the discipline necessary to work sanctimoniously with the rest of our neighboring empires, realizing our autonomy yet recognizing the responsibility of directing it toward greater unity.
On a personal level, I’ve always had a proclivity toward the number 4, and feel that this card exhibits a certain call to me, a standard to which I must rise. As such, I have declared myself Emperor of Stevetopia. As i have found the leadership of the United States to be severely lacking in pragmatism, principles, and wise use of resources, I have severed ties with the American Empire and started my own autonomous nation. Whether or not I can handle the worlds resources better than the gluttonous methods of mass consumerism remains to be seen, but in my particular empire, I know that each resource is valued, appreciated, and utilized for the most expansive purpose instead of being discarded in order to merely increase consumption so as to create the illusion of economic growth through wasted activity and resources.
I see the direction that this larger Empire is going, for I can look at what has happened historically and recognize when the same is happening again. The larger and more complex an Empire gets, the greater the chance of its toppling under its own weight. Thus is the challenge of the Emperor, to recognize the limits of his control and guide his energy to where his influence will be felt.
So you, as you create your own empire, rule your life with authority based on principles of fairness, equanimity, and all of the virtues that have been shared with you up until this point in your path. And though you must use a certain level of rigidity to be true with yourself, allow enough flexibility to incorporate the lessons that you will learn from this point on. For although we must each claim our own sovereignty, we still have a long way to go before we reach the end of our journey together.
